KEMA - Mikkelin Kehitysmaayhdistys

Mikkelin Kehitysmaayhdistys ry, tuttavallisemmin KEMA on pieni mutta aktiivinen järjestö. Yhdistyksen tarkoituksena on

  • lisätä oikeudenmukaisuutta Suomen ja kehitysmaiden välisessä kaupassa
  • kohottaa Suomen kehitysyhteistyön laatua ja määrää

  • ja kulttuuritapahtumia

Kema kuuluu jäsenjärjestönä Kehitysyhteistyön palvelukeskus Kepaan.

KEMA Mikkeli – Short profile in English

Mikkelin Kehitysmaayhdistys ry (KEMA), in English Mikkeli Association for Sustainable Development , is a local non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Mikkeli, Finland and established in 1986. It has about 30 members. The objectives of KEMA are:

  • increasing of fairness in trade between Finland and development countries worldwide by participating in the Fair Trade movement
  • supporting sustainable development cooperation by implementing projects with NGOs in developing countries, by lobbying for better Finnish development policy and by promoting public support for sustainable development cooperation.

KEMA has had several development cooperation projects in the past. These included a child welfare project in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenia (2006-2008). A garbage recycling project and a welfare project for the garbage collectors' community in Cairo, Egypt was implemented in 2000-2004. The most recent project is a village development project with Community Development Forum (CODEF) in Nepal (2010-2012). In Finland KEMA conducts seminars, events and information campaigns. KEMA organizes small scale retail sale of Fair Trade products in the Mikkeli region.

The latest development project started in January 2010 when KEMA was granted support from Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Finland for Livelihood Improvement & Environment development project for 2010-2012 with CODEF in Devichaur VDC. KEMA's cooperation partner in Finland is Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) which sponsors the sending of two student interns to work with the project yearly. More than ten private donors are supporting KEMA by donations.
